Beyond the Wall supports most fantasy story formats, but is particularly well suited to those inspired by the literature symbolized by Ursula K. LeGuin's first three novels, Terremer, and Lloyd Alexander's Chronicles of Prydain. These are low-fantasy stories about young heroes struggling to get out of perilous situations.
Although Beyond the Wall's basic rules are similar to those of many other games based on the world's most popular role-playing game, they offer something they don't: tools for playing almost immediately and with virtually no preparation. Using the character and scenario booklets, a group of players with a game master should be able to embark on an adventure with absolutely no preparation, for a session of around three to five hours, from character creation to the celebration of a glorious success or the disillusionment of a bitter defeat.
In 152 pages (full color, hardcover), you'll find all the rules you need to play Beyond the Wall and other adventures. It also includes a list of spells divided into three categories - magic tricks, spells and rituals - as well as a complete bestiary. In Barcelona, you will take on the role of builders in 19th-century Barcelona who are working on the new expansion to the city. Your main goal is to construct buildings to accommodate the citizens who want to leave the old city, and in the process, you will also build streets, create tram lines, and build public services. You may even decide to explore "Modernisme", a new architectural and arts style that has been gaining popularity among the rich.
Barcelona is played over a variable number of rounds interrupted by three scoring phases before a final scoring phase. Every round, each player takes a single turn consisting of two or more actions, a building phase, and then preparation for their next turn. At the end of the game, the player with the most points wins.
